PT Sriwijaya Air is a private company, founded by Chandra Lie, Hendry Lie, Johannes Bunjamin, dan Andy Halim. Sriwijaya Air started the business with one Boeing 737-200. Some experts who helped to pioneer the establishment of Sriwijaya Air were Supardi, Capt. Kusnadi, Capt. Adil W, Capt. Harwick L, Gabriella, Suwarsono and JokoWidodo.

In 2003, on Heroes Day, November 10th, Sriwijaya Air began its first flight from Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang, Jakarta to Palembang, Jakarta to Jambi, and Jakarta to Pontianak. Currently, Sriwijaya Air Group has 48 Boeing aircrafts with total of 53 routes, including regional route Medan-Penang and other international routes. In order to develop the route and market share, Sriwijaya Air also added Boeing 737-800 Next Generation (NG) and Boeing 737-900 Extended Range (ER).

For maintaining of the fleet, Sriwijaya Air has agreements with Garuda Maintenance Facility (GMF) as its trusted maintenance provider in Indonesia with international standards.
